Sustainability

The problem

We are living in a world where ‘disposable’ has become normality in so many aspects of our lives. Furniture is now like fast fashion for our homes, and it may be easy to see the appeal – low prices and ‘unmissable’ discounts! However, this furniture is mostly low-quality with sup-par materials and craftmanship – easily damaged and almost impossible to repair, so where does it end up…

Every year in the UK, 1.6 million tonnes of furniture and bulky waste is thrown away, buried in landfill or burnt in an incinerator. (suez.co.uk)

The Shelved System

With 22 million pieces of furniture discarded each year in the UK, it was our mission to create a system that encourages people to buy well and buy once.
This approach to design; ensuring a product is strong, robust, easy to build, and re-build, without any loss of functionality or strength, reduces waste and offsets a products carbon footprint across its much longer lifetime. The modular, re-configurable nature of our system allows the product to be re-used and re-purposed, so it can change and grow with you. Whether you're moving house, starting a family, or simply moving it to another room!

Our Materials

Steel Framework

The framework of our system is steel, used as it is incredibly strong, creating a solid, rigid structure with as little material as possible. All of our steel is sourced within the UK and is made from 55% recycled content, and is itself 100% recyclable. Leaving little to no waste. Steel is also infinitely recyclable, 100% recycled steel production produces only 15% of the greenhouse gas emissions of virgin steel production, a significantly reduced impact on the environment. Shelved is currently working hard to improve its recycled steel content year on year.

BRITISH DESIGN, BRITISH MANUFACTURING

Made in Britain

All of our furniture is manufactured in our factory in North Yorkshire, we have a very capable factory due to investments in the latest equipment and machinery – this factory services both Shelved and Rack Systems to ensure we can make our products as efficiently as possible with very little waste.

Everything we sell is made in the UK. From the steel, the board used for the panels, even our injected moulded components are all UK manufactured. This is something we pride ourselves on and feel extremely proud of.

All of our deliveries are flat packed, 99% of packaging is made from recyclable materials, and we carefully plan deliveries to reduce mileage.
